Taiwo Awoniyi is set to leave Nottingham Forest and join Coventry City, bringing an end to a spell at the City Ground that will always be remembered fondly by supporters.
Awoniyi arrived at Forest in 2022 as the club’s record signing and quickly became a fan favourite. His importance to the club was never more obvious than during the 2022/23 Premier League survival battle. The Nigerian scored six goals in four games towards the end of the season, playing a huge role in helping Forest stay in the Premier League.
Without Awoniyi’s goals during that run, it is difficult to imagine Forest securing survival. His performances against Southampton and Chelsea in particular showed the quality he could produce when fully fit and firing.
His Forest career has unfortunately also been disrupted by injuries, but there have been plenty of memorable moments. His power, pace and ability to lead the line gave Forest a different option in attack, while his attitude and connection with the supporters made him a popular figure at the City Ground.
For Coventry, this could prove to be an excellent signing. Awoniyi brings Premier League experience, physicality and the ability to stretch defences with his pace. If he can stay fit and find his best form, he could become a key player for Coventry and give them a proven striker capable of making a real difference.
For Forest, though, his departure leaves one clear priority: finding a new striker.
With Awoniyi moving on, Forest will need another No.9 who can provide goals, compete physically and fit into Oliver Glasner’s system. The club have strengthened in other areas, but replacing Awoniyi should now be high on the list of priorities.
Awoniyi leaves Forest with the respect and affection of the supporters. His time at the club may have had its frustrations, but he played a crucial role in keeping Forest in the Premier League and created memories that will not be forgotten.
